I'm on a little Ruhr area adventure today with the kids, will try to post about it (originally I was hoping to be in Hamburg this weekend but it didn't work out due to annoying reasons and I very sad about that).
The goal is to walk up to one of the many large sculptures on one of the spoil tips in the area. This one is in Bottrop, built from 1963 to 1980 and is made out of mining spoil and is about 80m high.
The side of the Halde is pretty green now, and there's a nice serpentine track up. Nice spring day too, with blooming cherry trees and everything.
At the top there's the 'Tetrahedron' sculpture from 1995 which es a 60m side length steel sculpture in the form of a Sierpiński tetrix (three iterations deep), with a staircase going up in the middle. It's one of my favorite places, but I haven't managed to go in a while.
All the steps to the three levels are suspended on steel cables and it's pretty windy today. In combination with the fact that the steps and the platforms are see through grids this made it feel a little bit scary.
