Making a list of pros and cons of getting in a time machine and going back to 1992 to run a nightclub. Cons: Everyone smokes inside, all the time, everywhere. So disgusting. Pros: Literally everything about: ...
@jwz There's also the wage stagnation graph. In the early 90s, we were a decade or so into the wage stagnation started by Reagan, but that means workers weren't as far behind in 1992 as they are now, 32 years later. So regular jobs had less buying power in the early 90s than in the late 70s, but it wasn't as bad as it could be (ie, now and the near future). This is another thing that pushes the peak back such that maybe The Matrix was right.
@jwz yeah but you’d have to live though the 90s knowing that Live Nation is coming and Pearl Jam’s efforts will flop. It was depressing enough when I didn’t know the result ahead of time.
@jwz In 1992, nightclubs in the UK had awful toilets that forever leaked. Nowadays, venues don't have club nights any more - they would be closed down because Councils decided to encourage developers to build flats in areas that used to have nightlife, but the toilets are great and have working hot water and soap.
If I went back to 1992, I would want my younger (pre-Covid!) body back.
@jwz I’m actually curious— once SF finally banned smoking in bars and nightclubs, how long did it take for the cigarette smoke odor to finally finish outgassing from inside DNA? And did you have to repaint and rent ozone emitters to do it?
@jwz Re the Matrix pinning the peak of human civilisation in 1999, I wrote this a few years ago: https://findthethread.blog/Algorithmic-Reality/ (pls to ignore a couple of examples we now know are bunk, I think the general point stands)
@jwz Some questions really: How are the Brooks Brothers Riots and Chat connected? And since when do they demand an Injury and Illness Prevention Program Model Plan?
You could call up Hilly Kristal at CBGB and warn him about the BRC's scaled rent increase endgame.
