sometimes I wonder how many other people like me were reading with great interest about distributed social networks in 2011 or so and started thinking "ok, I should see about running my own" and opened a tab and read the words "step 1 is to install PHP [or npm]" and then closed the tab
@technomancy won't lie though, I also bounced off the mastodon install and I haven't even tried installing discourse. And I'm a professional ruby programmer
@technomancy ++, but there's so many things... (container-*only* distribution, MySQL/MariaDB as a hard requirement...)
I didn't run my own ActivityPub server until I found Takahe/Incarnator (in retrospect, I should've picked GotoSocial :(
@dan oh absolutely; Mastodon is almost as bad
pleroma was pretty decent from a sysadmin perspective (back before the fascists took it over) and gotosocial is excellent; it's pretty clear to me that for the fediverse to have any liberatory power whatsoever it needs to move beyond huge clunky systems like masto where even a dumbass like me can admin it
