A love letter to the Star Trek canon generally and SNW in particular: https://www.readtheline.ca/p/matt-gurney-anson-mount-saved-star
@timbray Yeah, that pretty much nails it for me.
Though I should mention both Lower Decks and Prodigy are similarly good. But they're not the kinds of shows that can carry the universe.
@timbray Really nailed my feelings about Discovery. On the surface, I would love to watch Trek where a bunch of queer folk and their wonderful Captain go on adventures on a starship powered by magic mushrooms.
The result was unfortunately just not that interesting. I missed the ensemble characters.
Really happy to see how SNW tweaked the formula. Mount is fantastic after even just the few episodes I’ve watched.
@timbray having only watched TNG and making my way through DS9, I'm glad to know that a modern adaptation Gets It. Thanks for the read!
@timbray I watched Discovery to the end, and I also prefer Strange New Worlds.
However, to me the issue is that since the pandemic, I *can't* really watch bleak shows. I loved Netflix's Jessica Jones- ended in 2019. Now I doubt I'd be able to watch it unless a few years pass, and Ms. Marvel is my favorite Marvel TV show now.
I *know* if I watched Discovery before the pandemic I would have enjoyed it *much* more.
@timbray Part of what makes Mount so good is that he is comfortable in a lead, central role, but can also step back to the background when it's someone else's episode. Depending on where the camera points, he's either the main character or part of the scenery or anything in between, and he's comfortable anywhere along that line.
A lead "giving room" for others is part of what makes an ensemble work.
@timbray I literally got chills in the Discovery episode when we finally got to see the Enterprise and the re-imagined bridge. Right then I knew I wanted to see more of Anson Mount as Pike leading the rest of the Enterprise crew. SNW is so good.
@timbray apparently Anson Mount wasn’t told he would be playing Pike until the studio could do it in person

The rest of this series is also great
@timbray Discovery being all emotion and no heart is a great way of describing it. Also it felt.. cartoony? And not in a good way like Lower Decks and Prodigy.
@timbray he was outstanding in “Hell on Wheels” and got screwed on “Inhumans”.
If they really want to save Star Trek they need to put the shows on Hulu and Netflix after first run on Paramount.
