Looking over some old blog articles that never graduated to publication, I ran across this:
“It's funny that there's a whole genre of European painting (‘odalisque’) which is ‘vaguely oriental lady showing off her ass’.”
@mjd huh, I'd never researched the origin of that term. In Spain I heard it first like 20 years ago to describe (modern) female belly dancers (learning belly dancing was trendy for a while).
After learning about the original meaning, I'm a bit baffled.
